Color measurement of beverages
In the beverage industry, high standards are set for freshness and quality.
The manufacturers and producers of direct juices, juices from concentrate, nectars, spritzers, milk, coffee, tea, soft drinks, beer, alcoholic beverages and soft drinks all aim to comply with this.
HunterLab colorimeters help to ensure a consistent visual appearance for opaque, transparent and translucent samples.
Different measuring devices for different samples:
From carbonated soft drinks, fruit/vegetable juices or concentrates and smoothies to spirits – beverages can be opaque, translucent or transparent and require different measuring instruments and/or measuring techniques for successful color measurement.
Let us know what condition your liquid sample is in.
We will be happy to advise you.
Opaque, transparent, translucent
Opaque liquids usually have a high solids content, are not penetrated by light and are normally characterized by a high Brix value.
These include tomato juice, orange juice, smoothies, soy milk and protein drinks.
Samples of this type are best measured using a 45/0° reflectance colorimeter. This is the geometry that best matches the way the human eye ‘sees’ color.
Transparent liquids have a very low or no solids content and allow light to pass through with little or no absorption and scattering, so that objects on the other side can be seen clearly.
These liquids can only be measured with a transmission device.
Transparent drinks include water, apple juice, lemonade, soft/energy drinks and alcoholic beverages.
Translucent liquids have a medium level of solid components and a low Brix value and allow light to pass through, but only diffusely, so that objects on the other side cannot be clearly recognized.
Both reflective and transmissive measurement modes work well depending on the light transmittance of the sample.
Special accessories may be required for this.
