Today, a large number of films are produced for the packaging and coating industry, as well as for medical technology and building materials, e.g. thermoplastic polyurethane films (TPU films). The precise determination of colour and the examination of haze in the form of haze measurement in accordance with ASTM D1003 is very important in development and quality management. Instrumental colour measurement in transmission is now the standard procedure for transparent films. Until now, however, the haze measurement usually had to be carried out with a second device. HunterLab’s Colour measurement offers the perfect solution for determining exact colour values and the haze value of film at the same time.
The task
In addition to the precise and fast measurement of the CIE L*a*b* colour values in transmission, the haze value according to ASTM D1003 for films is to be determined at the same time. It should be possible to repeatedly fix the film in front of the aperture.
The solution
The Vista spectrophotometer can be used to easily and accurately measure the colour of transparent films in transmission. Depending on the setting, the haze value according to ASTM D1003 is also determined by the device in the same process. The practical transmission sample clamp makes it easy to position pieces of thicker film in front of the aperture. For thinner or slightly elastic pieces of film, use the holder for thin film, into which the film is simply clamped without creases using a magnetic mechanism above an opening.
The measurement is very simple:
- Lay the foil as smoothly as possible on the foil holder, place the opposite side on top and allow it to snap into place magnetically
- Position the entire holder magnetically in front of the measuring opening
- Trigger measurement
- Read colour and haze values on the device
