Colour measurement of pharmaceutical powders

Agera-with-powder-whitePharmaceutical powders and bulk solids are widely used to develop various types of medicines, from capsules and gel capsules to tablets. They undergo a compression process and are also available as soluble powders. Whether you’re measuring codeine phosphate or hyoscine hydrobromide, the world’s leading pharmaceutical manufacturers rely on HunterLab solutions to ensure the quality and consistency of raw materials and consumer products across the value chain.

The colour of pharmaceutical powders such as sorbitol, microcrystalline cellulose or anhydrous dibasic calcium phosphate is often measured as an incoming goods inspection to ensure batch consistency. The preferred method for analyzing powders is reflectance measurement.

Agera+with+powderThe measurement is explained very simply and compactly:

First fill a cuvette with the sample. Carefully tap the cuvette once briefly on a hard surface so that the powder settles a little and then place it on the aperture so that the powder can be measured through the glass bottom of the cuvette. (Make sure that no powder gets onto the aperture!)

Colour measurement is triggered at the touch of a button and the measured values are shown directly on the display.
